Growing pains: To play, or not to play

Growing pains are a common occurrence in children and adolescents, Caused by a slight mismatch of bone growth speed and muscle adaptation. As we experience a growth spurt, our long bones lengthen really fast, sometimes it can take some time for our muscles to catch up. Unfortunately, because our muscles remain shortened, they can aggravate the bone at their attachment site.

Two of the most well-known conditions are Severs and Osgood-Schlatters. Severs is an inflammation of the growth plate in the heel bone, while Osgood-Schlatters is an inflammation of the growth plate just below the knee. Both conditions can cause pain and discomfort, especially during physical activity.

As a physiotherapist, the best management for Severs and Osgood-Schlatters involves a combination of hands-on manual therapy, stretching, and strengthening exercises. The aim of physiotherapy is to reduce pain, improve range of motion, and strengthen the affected area to prevent further injury.

In addition to physiotherapy, rest and activity modification may be necessary to allow the affected area to heal properly. This may involve reducing or modifying the amount of physical activity or sports participation for a period of time.

At Berry Physiotherapy, we have a team of experienced physiotherapists who can help manage Severs and Osgood-Schlatters in children and adolescents. We use a range of techniques to help alleviate pain and improve mobility, including joint mobilisation, soft tissue massage, and exercise therapy.
